5 Words that Absolutely Inspired Me »

Want to hear something cool that happened to me this weekend. I was sent a message from a friend with five words that absolutely inspired me. She said, “Have an EXTRA amazing weekend.” Pretty simple really, I mean, people share encouraging thoughts with me all of the time. I often read closing comments to emails or voice messages with “have a great day” or “make it a great day” (I really like that one), but for some reason these five words caught me in a special way and I thought to myself, “you know what, I’m just going to do that. I’m going to make sure this weekend is more than good, fun, and amazing, I’m going to go out of my way to make sure that it is EXTRA amazing.”

I talk a lot about mindset with my clients when we’re working on reaching business and money goals that are big, exciting, and are well outside of their comfort zone. Not just the way that we think, but what we think, and what we actually, consciously, deliberately, and purposefully create as our thoughts. Our mindset and what we think makes the entire world we live in shift. And this shift can completely expand or even shrink the results that are possible.

I’m typically a positive outlook type of person and heading into this weekend it was almost as if I was taking my positive outlook for granted. I just figured I would have a nice, relaxing, and fun weekend with some friend and family and I never really gave it much thought. Until those five words smacked me in the face like a water balloon on a hot summer day… “Have An EXTRA Amazing Weekend!!!” I immediately changed my thinking, I consciously altered my thoughts, and I focused my energy on how I could actually create something extra amazing out of every situation. Not only was it amazing, but it felt unbelievably good.

So, I don’t know if you had an extra amazing weekend like I did, but I sure hope you did. And regardless I’m sending you this message first thing this week to offer these same five words of inspiration in hopes that you will create a way to have an EXTRA AMAZING week.

COACH TROY

If I could be this good without a coach, how great could I be with a coach?? »

If you’ve ever asked the question, what impact can a good coach really have on my business? I have a simple answer that came to me after an experience of the hardest I’ve ever worked for the easiest deal I’ve ever closed.
One of the best clients I’ve ever had came about in a very unique way. I’ve always done the majority of my marketing through word of mouth, and up to this point, I can count 99% of my business back to a referral from another client or friend. In this business, referrals are important, as they really cut down on the time it takes to build the relationship. I’ve had numerous clients who’ve come on board after one meeting simply because someone they trust implicitly recommended me highly. They barely even asked a question of me aside from, “So, to whom do I make out the check?” However, in this case, it was a little more work.

I was sent a referral from a client, Annie, to a colleague of hers, Paul. Paul was the head of a successful manufacturing company and not an easy guy with whom to schedule even an hour of time. However, after one phone call, Paul immediately and eagerly agreed to meet with me. We scheduled to meet at a Starbucks next to his office. After the initial pleasantries, I began asking my usual sort of investigative questions. Just like a medical doctor, before I try to make any sort of assessment as to how I can help a business, it’s important that I get a good picture of exactly what’s going on in the organization. So I started in with my questions.

“Paul, tell me about what’s going on with your business,” I asked.

“Well, everything is going pretty well, I’d say. We’re growing faster than we ever have, our staff is awesome, we’re generating great profits, and I’m working less. Overall it’s really good,” he answered, about as excited as a five-year-old at an ice cream shop. So I went a little deeper.

“Well, that sounds great. Are there any major challenges you are dealing with right now?”

“Actually we’re doing pretty well; no major problems. Worked through a few recently, but they’re all behind us and we’re moving forward and right on track,” he said calmly.

Let me paint a picture of my goals for asking these kinds of questions with a potential new client. One of the major elements I’m looking for is a gap between where they are and where they want to be. By initially asking them to share what is happening, then about what challenges they are facing, I get to hear right away about any immediate needs they have. It’s great to hear that there aren’t any pressing issues; however, that’s usually an uncommon response. Most people don’t even think about meeting with a coach unless there’s some sort of issue they are working towards. In this case, on the surface, Paul didn’t appear to have any issues. I was excited for him, but I wanted to know a little more so I went a little deeper. “So, what are your visions, goals, and objectives for growth over the next year?” I asked.

Paul went on to explain in great detail about what he wanted for the company, where he was going, what the goals were, what he anticipated as problems and challenges, and even how he was planning to deal with them. I fired off a few more questions checking his strategies for carrying all this out. He had those pretty solid too. So I went into the staff, finances, accountabilities, and communication; all good. I kept saying over and over, “Well that sounds great.” After about twenty minutes of inquiry, I was wondering why the heck this guy agreed to meet with me. His time is way too valuable, and he just wasn’t the type of guy who would take an hour just to chat with a business coach without some sort of intent. So finally, I decided I better just ask the obvious, and I said, “Okay, I give up. Everything in your business seems to be exactly like you want it, you’re happy about where you are, and officially you’re doing great, so why on earth did you want to meet with me?” His response blew my mind.

“Well, I figured if it could be this good without a coach, I was just wondering how good it could be if I had a coach helping me?” Whoa! Now that’s the type of thinking that gets you to the top of your game and then some. IF I COULD BE THIS GOOD WITHOUT A COACH, I WONDER HOW GOOD I COULD BE IF I HAD A COACH?

I instantly changed my approach and we began talking about upgrading everything. Needless to say, he hired me right there on the spot and we began working immediately. We took his current goals and targets and ramped them up to a point where he started to get nervous. We challenged his current staff, his leadership, his systems and structures, and we pushed the envelope to a point where he had to grow in a way he’d never imagined before. That was the hardest I’ve ever worked for the easiest deal I’ve ever had.

Now back to your question, “what impact can a good coach really have on my business?” The simple answer is it all depends on you and your own mindset. I refer to one of my favorite quotes from one of the greatest business men ever Henry Ford, “”Whether you think you can or can’t, you’re right.” If you think a coach will have an impact, then there’s a whole world of possibility and opportunity out there for you and you will experience breakthrough results. If you think it won’t, you’re right on that account too. It doesn’t matter if you’re business is struggling, if you are riding a massive wave of success like Paul, or anywhere in between. The truth is it’s really all up to you. If you want to play big, if you want to grow your business fast, if you want to build a strong and effective team, if you want to have a powerful mindset and focus, and if you want to have the strength, skill, and ability to overcome everything. Then put the structure in place to give you the absolute best possible chance for success. There’s a lot of evidence supporting business coaching, but none of it matters until you make your own decision. Yes it will, or No it won’t. Your choice!!

Top 10 Ways To Get The Most Out Of Your Business Coaching »

Just by having a coach and chatting with him/her on a regular basis, you
will get plenty of value — you don’t have to work hard at it — for the
benefits of coaching to occur. This is because the synergy that occurs as a
result of the coach and client relationship is what makes the biggest
difference to any well-motivated client.

But if you do want to maximize the value of the coaching relationship, here
are 10 ways to do so that I’ve seen work very, very well. If some of the
ideas are new to you, we can talk about them as part of our first several
sessions.

1. Focus on how you feel and want to feel, not just on what you want to
produce.
Sometimes, clients feel the need to focus the coaching time on how to
produce more tangible or financial results. But don’t forget the
intangibles, such as feeling happier, more peaceful and more inspired.
Results are very important, but the feelings you experience during your day
are equally important. Think of a brick wall — the bricks are the results,
the mortar is the feelings. Enjoy having both.

2. Talk about what matters most to you.
You may talk about anything you want to during the coaching session. This
includes your goals, your life, your needs, what you want to improve,
what’s bothering you, an idea you have, a problem you are dealing with,
even stuff that may not appear to be all that ‘useful’ to talk about. It’s
surprising what a difference it makes in the long run when you focus on
what you most selfishly want to talk about during coaching, not what you
feel you ‘should’ talk about during the session in order to get the most
value from your session.

3. Sensitize yourself so that you see and experience things earlier than
before.
As you know, time is collapsing, meaning that things are happening faster
and faster and that the pace of change continues to increase. For some,
this causes stress because they feel both the pressure to keep up and the
fear of getting left behind. But for others, they recognize this phenomena
as a chance to recognize opportunities as they occur, instead of seeing
them too late. How does one do this? By reducing whatever is clouding your
ability to see or numbing your ability to sense; we call this process
‘sensitizing yourself.’ The more you can feel, the faster you can respond
to events and opportunities. You sensitize yourself by reducing or
eliminating alcohol, television, adrenaline, stress and caffeine.

4. Feel coached during the 10,000 minutes of your week not just the 30
minutes of your session.
There are 10,080 minutes in a 7-day week. Coaching is occurring all during
your week, not just during your coaching session — such is the power of
coaching and the coaching relationship. What you and you coach talk about
during your sessions will resonate with you during your week, and some of
the seeds or ideas that have been discussed will grow between sessions. All
you have to do is to fully live your life between coaching sessions and be
open to seeing what you and your coach talked about.

5. Reduce the drain and strain in your life.
Coaching works because it focuses you in two areas. First, you’ll be helped
to stretch yourself further, take more actions than you would on your own,
and devise/implement effective strategies to get what you want. At the same
time, you will also be identifying and reducing things that drain and
strain you, such as tolerations, stressful situations, difficult
relationships, pressured environments and recurring problems. So, don’t
just hoist a bigger sail, make sure there are no cracks or barnacles on
your hull.

6. Get more space, not just time, in your life
Coaching needs room in order to work. If you’re too busy, rushed,
adrenalined or burdened, you’ll be using coaching to push yourself harder,
instead of using coaching to become more effective. We strongly suggest
that you put some projects on hold, reduce your roles, simplify your day,
reduce your goals, streamline your work, install personal management
systems, etc., before or immediately after starting with a coach.
Simplification gets you space. Space is needed to learn and evolve yourself
beyond where you are today.

7. Become incredibly selfish.
Coaching is about you and what you most want. As such, you’ll probably need
to start putting yourself first if you haven’t done so already. At the very
least, you’ll want to be come selfish, in the sense that you are what
matters most. When you are happy and are doing well, others will benefit as
well.

8. Be open to seeing things differently.
In coaching, you will be working with your goals (called, the ‘what’) and
your strategies to reach these goals (called, the ‘how’). But you will also
be working on you (called, the ‘who’). In other words, you will get more
out of coaching if you are willing to relook at some of your assumptions,
ways of thinking, expectations, beliefs, reactions and approaches to
success. There are always newly developed concepts, principles,
distinctions and evolutionary steps to learn. You won’t be forced or even
encouraged to make these changes given they are so personal, but we do ask
that you at least consider different approaches and ways of thinking and
try them out to see if they work for you.

9. Be willing to evolve yourself, not just develop yourself.
Coaching is both a developmental process as well as an evolutionary one. In
other words, you’ll be learning how to accomplish more with less effort –
let’s call this the developmental aspect of coaching. But you will also be
thinking differently and expanding yourself and your world, which we call
evolving. Perhaps surprisingly, evolving is a skill and it’s worth learning
because life itself is evolving, not just developing.

10. Design and strengthen your personal and business environments.
The value of coaching can be extended if you use part of your coaching time
to design the perfect environment in which to live and work. Where you live
and how you live are key to your success. Who you spend time with and are
inspired by can make the difference between success and failure. Be willing
to invest some time — and money — in improving your environment so that
you feel supported to be your best.

A Fantastic Analogy for Business Success »

Recently I was on a phone call with four of the greatest speakers, trainers, and business minds of my generation, Brian Tracy being one of them. He gave an awesome analogy that went a little like this…

Imagine you’re the owner of a professional baseball team. You’re looking to hire a new manager to pull your team out of the bottom ranks and become a winner. The new manager comes to you with his plan for success. He tells you that since your team has been on a big losing streak lately and attendance at games has dropped drastically that revenues and earnings for the team have gone down considerably. So, seeing as how revenues are down he’s decided to cut the teams training and practice program to save costs…

Hmmm, that doesn’t make sense, does it?

Just like in professional sports, our success demands that we constantly practice and improve our skills.

Coaching Tip: Think for a moment, what skill are you putting off developing that if you were to develop just a little bit, could totally transform your own level of performance as a business leader?

Quick test:
Below are the 4 pillars of transformational leadership, rate yourself on a scale of 0-5 for each

Vision & Strategy ___
Execution & Accountability ___
Solving Problem/Managing Challenges ___
Communication ____

Now ask the three to five people who work closest to you to give you a rank 0-5.

Pick the one that needs the most work, call your coach and get on it.

Don’t have a coach…give me a call I’ve got your back!!
