A few years ago I asked a client of mine, who is very proficient at making lots of money,

“How can I make my money work for me BETTER?”

His response taught me a very powerful lesson. He said, “Troy, I want you to understand something. People of average wealth have their money work for them. However, the secret to true wealth is not about having your money work for you, the secret is learning how to work your money.”

I see most small business owners are so focused on trying to make enough money to get by they fail to advance to the next step. As business owners we need to spend some time focusing on learning how to work our money to move into greater levels of financial independence.

In several conversations I’ve had with successful business owners, who have built and run multi-million dollar businesses, I’ve heard them tell me that if they had learned this lesson in the beginning that they would be retired today. Instead they are back in the rat race working to build up their financial stability once again.

Here are three very important money mindsets to keep you focused on the most important element of your success…making, keeping, and growing your income.

Mindset #1 – When you hit the lottery and your business takes off understand that it doesn’t always last forever.

            This sounds so simple but it is one that is hard to remember when we are experiencing the “lottery effect” of a good success wave. One of the biggest mistakes over the past 10 years is how a lot of small businesses hit the lottery due to the amazing economic growth conditions. As a result, business owners began living as though this phenomenon would always occur for them. They believed that since they had gained massive momentum that it would just keep happening. It did not. As a result they are back in the daily grind of trying to rebuild the momentum they once had when they easily could have found themselves retired and living the good life while everyone else struggled to stay afloat.

            Take every momentum boost with your business as a true gift to be cherished and handled carefully. Use the boost to improve your confidence while always strengthening your financial foundation.

Mindset #2 – What I have today matters.

            It is easy to think that the income I have today is not enough to warrant my careful attention to my financial planning. Therefore I neglect to set up or follow a plan. It’s easy to say, “I’ll do that when I have more money. I don’t have enough now to make a difference.” The problem with this is that you’re neglecting to reinforce a habit that will serve you in the long run. Once the money starts coming in, it will be too late to learn how to be an effective money manager.

The energy of money says that we will have what we are capable of managing and nothing more. Begin implementing the strategies for effective money management today regardless of where you are on the scale of success. This will set the foundation for being able to handle more.

Mindset #3—Take it from the money gurus…learn how to work your money.

            Take advantage of all the opportunities you can to gain money education. There are many amazing strategies that can be implemented from day one to help you to leverage your money, set yourself up for continued future success, and protect yourself from losses. This week I’m in Central Oregon and the weather is a fabulous 80 degrees. Yesterday, through the power of networking and good fortune, Kay (my mom) and I played golf at one of the premier private courses here in Central Oregon called Pronghorn. What a treat. The course was phenomenal… and hard, at least for someone who has never played it before. Luckily we had Peter with us. Peter is a forecaddie. In case you are wondering, a forecaddie is a person situated in the general landing area of holes to help quickly identify a ball’s position. As well as being great at spotting our ball, Peter was able to tell us exactly where we should be hitting the ball. He knew the distance to every tree, bunker, mound, flag position, and curve of the green. On several occasions Peter would say, “Now aim this shot about 15 feet to the right of the flag stick and hit it about x yards.” Not knowing the course, I trusted my advisor and adjusted my aim, even though his advice sometimes was counter to what I thought I should be doing. On the rare occasion I actually executed the shot like he instructed, the ball landed out of sight, behind the hill, and I heard Peter say, “Just wait. You’re going to see your ball trickling down to the flag.” And then, just as if he had control of my ball with a remote control, out from behind the mound came my ball, rolling gently toward the hole. Without his course knowledge I never would have picked that shot, and consequently my ball would have rolled right off the green.

I run across quite a few people who are scrambling their way through business just like playing a brand new golf course. They are armed simply with their own ideas and a set of tools for execution (or should I say “a set of clubs”) without much insight into what to expect and how to get around obstacles. They rely on their own experience and make decisions based on their own singular perspective. I’m not saying this is wrong. Just like playing a new golf course without a forecaddie, it’s more challenging and there’s a lot more opportunity for struggle, frustration, and the chance to make expensive mistakes. I think of a business coach like a forecaddie. They can help to steer you through the maze of decision making, problem solving, and effective strategizing all the while helping you to avoid some costly mistakes.

The late, great Jim Rohn, world-famous motivational speaker, always talked about “the seasons of our life” such that we all experience seasons just like Mother Nature provides us spring, summer, fall, and winter. The winter season is a time of struggle and survival. There are many difficulties during winter, but it is always followed by the thaw of spring. Spring is a time of new life. It is a rebirth and a time to nurture and carefully attend to the new opportunities that are coming into being. And then comes summer, which is a time of cultivation, growth, and protection. Summer is when the planted seeds mature and blossom. It is a time when we must protect the fruits of our labor and prepare for the fall harvest. Following every summer comes the fall, when we reap what we sow and prepare ourselves for the inevitable returning winter.

I love this analogy of life and how it applies to our everyday existence. As Tony mentioned this week, his perspective is that, as a whole, we are still in a winter season, which we have been enduring for two years now. Just like winter, there are some days of sunshine, but we are still experiencing many tough times.

Three tips he gave us to continue to endure this winter season successfully:

1) Don’t lie to yourself, and don’t make it worse than it is.

I think Tony put a very interesting spin on this concept. When I think about “not lying to myself,” I look at how I try to downplay the severity of the issue and make it less of the big deal that it is. On the other hand, Tony said, “Don’t make it worse than it is,” which I actually see a lot with business owners. Many people are allowing themselves to suffer much more than they need to.

2) See it better than it is.

This is a huge concept and one into which we really need to put more conscious and focused effort. I am a huge advocate for creating and maintaining a powerful vision of the future. I spend a major chunk of time with each and everyone of my clients in creating and clearly articulating their vision for the future. This vision is what gives us direction as well as focus but, most importantly, it gives us hope and purpose. I have seen so many people lose sight of their vision, and it breaks my heart because I can feel their confusion and pain. I can see their struggle and watch them running to and fro chasing their tails, trying desperately to find some stable ground and something solid onto which to firmly hold. It’s a scary thing, but the great news is, with a little help from a good business coach, you can get your vision clear and you can get it fast. This is easily the fastest and most dramatic result that will produce the absolute greatest impact in any person, their business, and their life…and it happens FAST.

3) Go after role models; look for someone who’s done it so it doesn’t seem fake to you.

Tony really hit the nail on the head here. It’s so fun to create visions of the future, to dream big, and to let your imagination wander to visions of glory and riches, but when the reality train hits you smack in the head, all that you’re left with is a fabulous fantasy and an empty wallet. As an old friend used to say, “That and five bucks will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.” However, if you can find someone who’s done what you’re trying to do, someone who can see the picture you have painted, and someone who has the ability to help you turn your visions into reality, now you’ve just “Supermanned” that speeding locomotive of reality. I always promote that the first three aspects that need to be added to each and every person’s success team are a mentor, a coach, and a peer-support group. There is just too much that needs to be done, too many big, life-changing decisions that need to be made, and all of it is happening so fast that we simply cannot waste time being in any sort of stuck, confused, frustrated, scared, unsure, or timid state of mind and try to get through it on our own.

So, if you won’t take it from me, at least take it from one of the greatest transformational leaders on the planet and come out of denial, clarify your vision of a brilliant and prosperous future, and find those successful role models to emulate and be coached by so you can be ready—because spring is coming!!!

However, making decisions quickly doesn’t mean that the person is reckless. Instead, it means the million-dollar business owner is willing to invest in opportunities and take calculated risks. There are a lot of risks in developing a million-dollar business, and right now is one of the riskier times in recent U.S. history. Many of us have been burned over the past few years, and a lot of us have lost our previous investments—but that doesn’t mean that we need to stop playing the game just because we had some failures. As one of my previous mentors used to say, “The game is always on!” It’s true; the game of success does not stop. It doesn’t wait. It doesn’t slow down. It doesn’t care if you lost all your money in real estate, your house, and your job. The game of success goes on.

            In the last Million-Dollar Business Strategies and Secrets event, I asked the audience to give me their reasons why we should all be striving to develop a million-dollar business. After the expected answers like peace of mind, lifestyle, comfort, and security, finally the best answer of all popped up: WHY NOT? 

            There’s no benefit to playing small. When I ask business owners why they are not pushing to grow their businesses, the answer I hear is usually some manifestation of a fear. For example, growing the business may mean hiring more staff, which means additional headaches associated with managing a team. This avoidance of an uncomfortable outcome—translated as fear—stops their growth and, consequently, drops the anchor on their ship sailing towards their dreams of peace of mind, a comfortable lifestyle, and security.

            The reality is that there are so many ways to work around our fears about massive business growth, no matter what they are, but we have to first make the decision that we are committed to having what we want—everything we want—and then just keep our eyes, ears, and hearts open to discovering and allowing the killer opportunities to come our way.

            As I said before, great business minds—those same people who tend to have all of the time, money, and freedom we wish we had—are the type of people who are willing to invest in opportunities and take calculated risks. In today’s economic condition, the absolute best place to invest is in our own knowledge. The game has changed in the past few years. There are new rules, and the way we used to play the game to become successful is not always the best path today. We must invest our time, energy, and finances into gaining the knowledge of how to more effectively play the game the way it is being played right now.

            So keep your eyes peeled, your ears tuned, and your heart open for those killer opportunities to gain valuable knowledge and insight that could change your life forever. And take advantage of those killer opportunities. Drop whatever else you’re doing and go for it.

Recently I realized I’ve really been letting negative thoughts and emotions take over way too often. It was hard to admit at first because I really have worked for many years to keep a positive outlook. I’m a coach; wouldn’t that seem to be a natural part of the job? Funny thing is that I’ve been coaching my clients to keep a positive outlook and positive thoughts, but I started slacking. 

I really didn’t even realize how much I was doing it. Luckily I have a good coach who points these things out to me. Crazy thing is, even though I received some good coaching, I still had a tough time changing my thoughts. It was kind of like a virus that just kept eating away at me, and slowly but surely my business had been paying the price, not to mention my own happiness and enthusiasm.

The big challenge that I’ve been facing lately is refining and re-defining the type of coaching I want to do and coaching business I want to have. I’ve been practicing as a business coach for almost nine years, and I’m feeling the need to advance my practice to the next level. For more than a year, however, I’ve been unclear as to what that next level is supposed to look like. I’ll confess that being unclear for that period of time has been diminishing my confidence about ever finding that clarity and vision. 

Luckily I did get some really good coaching: “Troy, be grateful for all that you have. Look for the positives in where you are right now. Allow yourself to see, feel, and be in the mindset that everything is working.” At first, those words really sounded cheesy to me. I mean, what’s the real benefit of allowing, seeing, and feeling when really what I need is to be doing!! I took the advice anyway and began applying it. Okay, it’s no surprise that I’m going to report that it’s working, but what I want to report is that after reading The Greatest Miracle in the World, IT IS REALLY WORKING!!!

I’ll tell you how it’s really working in later posts, but what I want share now is that we have to realize that we are already extremely successful. I learned that the number one reason we don’t have everything we desire is  our lack of confidence and nothing else. Throughout our lives we are constantly faced with the reminders of what we have not done or have tried without success. Yet we fail to accept credit for the successes and accomplishments we have had. We are living, breathing, walking, and talking miracles. Our greatest and unmatched successes have already been achieved. We truly are free to go forward and create absolutely anything we desire, as we already have all the tools, ability, and skills we can ever need. We just have to remember to stop and acknowledge ourselves for each and every piece of our miraculous lives, to truly be grateful for every single piece of ourselves, and “allow” our confidence to build and build.   

Coach’s Challenge: This week’s coach’s challenge is to read the books The Jackrabbit Factor and The Greatest Miracle in the World. (I literally read each of them in two hours – and I’m a pretty slow reader.) At the end of The Greatest Miracle is an opportunity for you to take on a life-changing mission.
